Profile
Sharon G. Feldman is associate dean for Division I (arts, languages, and cultures) in the School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Richmond. She holds the William Judson Gaines Chair in Modern Foreign Languages and is professor of Spanish and Catalan studies in the Department of Latin American, Latino, & Iberian Studies.
Her scholarship focuses on modern and contemporary theatre, film, and performance from the Iberian Peninsula. She is the author of Els límits del silenci: La censura del teatre català durant el franquisme [The Limits of Silence: The Censorship of Catalan Drama during the Franco Regime] (Publicacions de l’Abadia de Montserrat), co-authored with Francesc Foguet, and In the Eye of the Storm: Contemporary Theater in Barcelona (Bucknell University Press; Catalan-language edition: A l’ull de l’huracà: Teatre català contemporani, L’Avenç), which received the Serra d’Or Critics’ Prize for Research in Catalan Studies. Her first book, Allegories of Dissent: The Theater of Agustín Gómez Arcos (Bucknell University Press; Spanish-language edition: Alegorías de la disidencia: El teatro de Agustín Gómez Arcos, Diputación de Almería), was recognized as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title. She is also co-editor and translator, with Marion P. Holt, of Barcelona Plays: A Collection of New Works by Catalan Playwrights (Martin E. Segal Theatre Center, CUNY).
Her new book, Guimerà a Amèrica: Set dones per a un fenomen transatlàntic [Guimerà in America: Seven Women in the Making of a Transatlantic Phenomenon] (L’Avenç), examines the making of Àngel Guimerà’s transatlantic reputation in North America. Through the stories of seven women who were instrumental in disseminating his work across linguistic, theatrical, and national boundaries, the study traces how Guimerà (1845–1924), one of Catalonia’s most celebrated cultural figures, maintained a continuous presence on stages and screens across the United States and Canada during the early twentieth century, illuminating the transatlantic circulation of Catalan theatre and its role in shaping modern performance culture.
In addition to her monographs, she has translated more than thirty plays from Catalan into English, many of which have been staged or presented in readings in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She has published more than 100 scholarly articles, book chapters, and other publications, advancing the international dissemination of Catalan and Spanish theatre and film. In recognition of her work, she was elected a corresponding member abroad of the Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona [Royal Academy of Letters of Barcelona]. She is also a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and serves on the advisory board of the CRAE (Centre de Recerca de les Arts Escèniques, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona).
She has held visiting appointments at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where she served as Mercè Rodoreda Chair in Catalan Studies, the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the Institut del Teatre de la Diputació de Barcelona, where she was a Fulbright Senior Lecturer.
As associate dean, she supports faculty across the arts, languages, and cultures within the School of Arts & Sciences, oversees the hiring of contingent faculty, manages curriculum change, and coordinates enrollment management and teaching assignment projections.
