PORT 111

ELEMENTARY BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE

Introduction to Portuguese language as spoken in Brazil for students with no prior training in Portuguese, or who are not advanced speakers of other romance languages. Stresses the acquisition and development of speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills, which includes an introduction to elements of Brazilian culture, as well as other Portuguese speaking areas around the world.

INTENSIVE INTERMEDIATE PORTUGUESE

Reinforcement and further development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Portuguese; detailed survey/study of Lusophone cultures.

PORT 300

PORTUGUESE FOR ROMANCE LANGUAGE SPEAKERS

Accelerated introduction to Brazilian Portuguese language and culture for students already proficient in Spanish. Focus on developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through the study of grammar and selected readings.

PORT 302

BRAZIL: CULTURE AND SOCIETY

An introduction to the study of Brazil’s culture and society. Discussions on a varied selection of representative texts that explore Brazilian culture and society with a focus on the 20th and 21st centuries. Taught in Portuguese.

PORT 303

BRAZIL: CITIZENSHIP AND THE ENVIRONMENT

An exploration of the civic role of Brazil’s citizens with respect to the environment in a global context. Discussions on a varied selection of representative texts that explore Brazilian environmental initiatives and challenges with a focus on the 21st century. Taught in Portuguese.
